| NAA Joins NECIS
The Natural Areas Association has joined the National
Environmental Coalition on Invasive Species (www.necis.net) as its
15th member. Peter T. Jenkins, Director of International Conservation
for Defenders of Wildlife and membership coordinator of NECIS,
welcomed NAA to the membership. NAA is joining groups such as
Defenders of Wildlife, Ecological Society of America, National
Wildlife Federation, Natural Resources Defense Council, The Nature
Conservancy, and others motivated by a concern for native species and
their habitats.
The NECIS has as its mission to:
1) promote sound state, federal, and international policy that
prevents harmful non-native, or invasive, species from being
introduced, becoming established, and spreading in the United States
and other countries,
2) support ecologically sound prevention, research, control, and
eradication of invasives where appropriate, and
3) enhance cooperation among environmental, recreational, and other
natural resource-oriented and scientific non-profit groups to achieve
more success in the invasive species policy arenas.
As with the MOA between NAA and NA-EPPC (the National Association of
Exotic Pest Plant Councils), NAA will be working with NECIS to expand
awareness of the threat to natural areas posed by invasive species.
NECIS has been very active in supporting federal invasive species
legislation, such as bills to address ballast water as a invasion
vector and to provide increased funding for national wildlife refuges
to control invasive species. •
