MOUNTAIN REGION NATURAL AREAS STEWARD
Virginia's Natural Heritage Program is seeking a
qualified individual to fill a vacancy in Roanoke,
Virginia. This position is part of DCR's Natural
Heritage Program responsible for conserving
Virginia's biological diversity through inventory,
protection and stewardship. The position is part of
a professional natural resource team managing the
state Natural Area Preserve (NAP) system, which
protects habitat for rare species and outstanding
examples of Virginia's natural communities. The
position is responsible for developing management
plans for Mountain Region NAPs and conducts
biological monitoring programs, invasive species
control programs, natural community restoration, and
rare species habitat restoration in the Mountain
Region. The Mountain Region Steward will work
closely with the Western Fire Leader to plan and
implement prescribed burns. Additionally, position
works to develop community- based teams of
volunteers and coordinates preserve management
activities with the Mountain Region Operations
Steward; provides biological management expertise
for conservation of natural heritage resources on
all NAPs within the Mountain Region; and provides
technical consultations on natural area stewardship
issues to a wide range of clients. The position will
have procurement and outreach responsibilities as
well as completing field work and natural heritage
data submission.
Qualifications: Knowledge of natural history,
natural resource management techniques, conservation
biology principles, botany, ecology, soil science,
and geology. Competent with GPS methods, familiar
with surveying, skilled in the use of pesticides in
the control of undesired vegetation. Excellent
physical condition and capable of arduous outdoor
activity with the ability to meet physical fitness
standards for service on prescribed burning and
wildfire suppression crews.
HIRING RANGE: $31,352-$42,000
